Originally completing a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art (Jewellery Design and Metal Technique), University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, Marlize had a gallery/workshop in South Africa. After immigrating to Australia she found she had a passion for ceramics and studied for a Diploma of Arts (Ceramics) at Box Hill TAFE. Marlize was so fortunate to spend time at the Cité Internationale Des Arts, Paris as an artist in residence in 2009. In 2010 she had another Artist Residency in South Africa with Hennie Meyer, ceramic artist.
‘My art revolves around the theme of memories and the passing of time, how some memories are vivid, while others are fleeting. Memories act as a map of our choices and experiences. Memories are organic and change as time passes and in the end it is the way each individual remembers it. I experiment with different techniques, textures, clay bodies, materials and colours and in doing so discover new creative opportunities.’
Marlize’s work includes a range of ceramics, from finely handmade porcelain jewellery and spoons to domestic plates. Marlize also designs and makes beautifully handcrafted jewellery from silver, gold and semi-precious as well as precious stones.
Beyond Stonehouse, Marlize also exhibits and sells her work at Small Pieces Gallery and Lilly Friedlander Gallery. She teaches at Manningham Art Studios and Wyreena Art Centre as well as Heide Gallery.
