After completing a Diploma of Art Ceramics at Outer Eastern College of TAFE, Diane spent a number of years as a potter. During this time she worked with many different types of clay, including Earthenware, Stoneware and Paper clay. She made domestic pots as well as hand built sculptural pieces. The surface decoration was an important part of her work. Glaze on glaze was a particular interest, where the effect of different glazes together is magical. She also used underglaze colours to decorate earthenware. Her favourite form of decoration was surface texture and contrast; she liked to add handles, lumps and bumps as well as rough and smooth texture to her work.
Diane has been working with textiles instead of pottery for about 10 years, concentrating mostly on felt. ‘I am very interested in felting fine merino wool with silk, this is called nuno felt. This also gives me the opportunity to mix colours and textures together in a similar way to the decoration on my pots.’ Diane’s current work includes a range of textile bags, scarves, wraps and pictures featuring felt and silk. |
