Craftsman In Wood
John Tilbrook is a craftsman based in Ashwood, Victoria who works exclusively in Australian timbers.
For more than forty years John has been making inlaid boxes, jewellery, photo frames and especially his sought after wooden birds. The eyes and beaks of these birds are made from Redgum which has been buried and preserved in the mud of the Murray River for between 5,000 - 7,000 years and has been dyed an intense black colour in the process.
This wood has been supplied by a company called Australian Ancient Redgum, and for more than three decades John has been commissioned by them to produce a wide range of items which have been sold and sent all over the world.
John uses a unique inlay process developed by himself to produce pieces which which take advantage of the spectacular range of native timber colours and textures for their effect.
