Take advantage of this free demonstration and learn about this wonderful technique and adding colour to your home or garden.

Mary McMahon ---- Artist Profile

Mary works with found ceramic pieces that were long lost or broken treasures and gives them a second life by incorporating pieces into making magnificent pieces of art that can decorate the inside or garden areas of the home.
Mosaics is a true recycling artform and can be used to brighten up every area of the home from internal wall art, pathways, vases to furniture pieces.
Mary's mosaics are delightfully bright and joyous and her colour and pattern combinations wonderful.

Rose Hainal

16th April 2019

ROSE HAINAL ---- Artist Profile
There's no doubting I'm an art lover in both mind and practise. Give me a blank canvas and I'll soon be hit by a lightning bolt of inspiration.
Sometimes I feel inspired to express a message through my art, a social commentary or idea but more importantly I hope my paintings tell a story and perhaps inspire the viewer to step inside and have a little walk around.

A Reflection, Where To From Here
Pam Booth
5 -31 March  2019

Pam has lived and worked in Warrandyte for over 30 years. She has a great interest in visual arts and over the past 15 years has developed an interest in textiles and mixed media. A very special partnership developed with Leonie Thomas and they worked collaboratively to experiment and ultimately produce felt garments, large canvases and wall hangings. Pam has now concentrated her creativity into the area of painting with acrylics. Her paintings have been greatly influenced by the felting process and her use of colour and pattern show evidence of this. Her particular interest continues to be the interpretation of the "face" and she is now focusing on the face and figure in landscape.

The Melbourne Teapot Exhibition was started by a group of dedicated artists from The Studio@Flinders and was held annually in Flinders, Victoria, since 2004.
With the closure of the Flinders gallery early in 2016, Stonehouse realized the great loss of such a wonderful exhibition to Melbourne, artists and the general public.
With the blessing of Flinders members, Stonehouse has undertaken to continue this great tradition.

Stonehouse would like to thank our wonderful sponsors who generously gave their time, food & drink or donated awards which enabled the success of this wonderful exhibition.

For the month of March Stonehouse Gallery will host a diversity of creativity in wood.
Found, recycled  and new woods have been used by the Makers to create collectors boxes, lamps, chopping and serving boards ,coasters, place-mats, bowls and sculptural forms.

Hamish Hill is our Guest Maker this month.
Hamish's work is based on a philosophy of simplicity and integrity of form and structure. Many of his pieces incorporate different woods, often accenting particular aspects of the design with a different colour of timber. Having a keen interest in the individual characteristics and unique beauty of each piece of timber, Hamish cuts and dries most of the timber he uses himself. The timber takes a minimum of two years to dry and then requires extensive machining. He obtains all of his timber from unwanted suburban trees and is always on the lookout for appropriate trees that have been cut down.

I believe that a painting is something that should lift your mood whenever you look at it -to remind us that life doesn't always have to be serious.
My paintings are influenced by my surroundings, the seasons, music, architecture and everyday life events. I like to distort reality and give a distinctive (and sometimes humorous) slant on the world around us. I work mainly with acrylic paint, but have recently expanded my art practice to include linocut printing

After working for fifteen years in the graphic design & printing industry, I started painting in 2005.  However, it was only in 2007 when I had the opportunity to stay at home to care for my two children that I started painting full time. I have been successfully exhibiting my work in Melbourne and regional Victoria since 2008.

This selection of hand printed copper plate etchings and linocuts illustrate flora and fauna that is uniquely Australian. The work has been influenced in style and technique by early Australian colonial printmakers that were eager to record the curiosities and marvels of the antipodean world.

Two hundred years on from this time, I have discovered in my research for this project that many of the animals and plants that intrigued the artists and scientists among early settlers are now listed as endangered species. Natural habitat is fast disappearing as development of industry and urban sprawl rapidly continues.

As a suburban dweller I have had to actively search for examples of native flora and pockets of natural habitat to depict in my work, often well outside of my local area. I have drawn and photographed fauna from the collection at Melbourne Museum, Melbourne Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary.

Through this experience of developing the work for this exhibition, a realization of the fragility of our ecology has occurred, resulting in a shift in my thinking from taking our national icons from the natural world for granted, to considering how my actions can affect the preservation of the unique beauty and wonder of Australian native animals and their environment.

Tap Tap Tap
3–31 March 2014

An exploration of the simplicity and beauty of form.

Artist Statement
"The connection of shapes transform into a vessel which passes the natural elements of light and the breeze of air.The trees outside my kitchen window cast black shadows onto the white wall. A breeze sways the shadow.

This scenario is where my concept originates from. I wanted to create pieces of pottery that welcomes light and breeze.

I created many holes for the breeze to flow through.
The candle holder contains several holes to let the light pass through. As a result of the size and angles of the holes, the light presents different images every time.

I sculptured the clay with my hands into thin pieces and connected them to form my creation.
I randomly handpicked different sized pieces of clay. No formed shapes are the same. Therefore every completed piece has a slightly different appearance. I enjoy this ‘unknown’ factor of anticipating a unique result when I am producing my work."

Stonehouse Gallery is dedicated to the support and promotion of ceramics as a serious art form, whether sculptural, functional or decorative, and we pride ourselves on being able to provide a rare venue for the showcasing of works by many dedicated artists.

The now prestigious Stonehouse Tertiary Ceramic Student Encouragement Award is offered annually to all Victorian ceramics students, studying accredited ceramics courses. The aim of the award is to celebrate the efforts of students who are undertaking studies in ceramics and to nurture their talents as they move towards completion of their qualification.

Each year two students from each institute, College or University, who are entering their second year of study, are selected by the ceramics coordinator for inclusion in the exhibition. Stonehouse then liaises with each student in regard to selection and promotion of their works.

In 2014, noted director of Skepsi Gallery, Anna Mass assisted judging for the major prize together with several encouragement awards.
